Cisco Revamps Key LAN Switches with Virtualization

Cisco added new virtualization capabilities to its Catalyst 6500 that allow customers to get a performance boost without having to "rip and replace" the chassis switch.

At the same time, the company refreshed its 8-year-old Catalyst 4500 LAN switches by adding a new Supervisor engine, new line cards and new chassis that promise to boost performance by a factor of four.

The new Catalyst 6500 Virtual Switching System 1440 allows customers to collapse multiple physical Catalyst 6500 chassis into a single logical switch. This is intended to boost performance and reduce operational overhead by allowing multiple switches to be managed as a single unit.

Using the VSS 1440 to combine multiple Catalyst 6500 switches, customers can scale performance up to 1.44 terabits per second.

Natchez man shoots wife in mistaken home invasion

NATCHEZ — A Natchez man shot and killed his wife early Tuesday morning, mistaking her for an intruder.

Police Chief Mike Mullins said Glenn and Deborah Mizell woke to the sound of their barking dog.

Glenn went to investigate, taking a pistol with him.

Mullins said as Glenn patrolled the house, he was unaware that his wife had left the bedroom and gone into the kitchen.

“He mistook her for an intruder," Mullins said.

When Glenn saw Deborah's figure in the dark he fired his gun once, striking her in the chest.

Mullins said Deborah, 49, died at the scene.

The shooting occurred shortly before 4 a.m.

“From our preliminary investigation it appears to be an accidental shooting," he said.

Energy strategy delivers sustainable energy system

Faster reductions in emissions may occur if the Genesis-owned Huntly plant can be economically retired into a drought year reserve role, or switched to gas.

Slide 6: Role of fossil fuel generation

There’s a good reason why we didn’t go for a 100 percent renewable target, and it’s because of security of supply and cost. Fossil fuels, especially gas, will continue to have an important, albeit declining role for some time to come.
They provide security, versatility and stability in how electricity is supplied. The government’s recent successes in stimulating gas and oil exploration will help to ensure we can use our indigenous resources, rather than imports.

But while some fossil fuelled electricity is needed, we don’t need lots more of it.
