| Hypervisor Rivals Targeting VMware
A rash of hypervisor virtualization announcements from Microsoft , Oracle and Sun signal the game is on to beat down leader VMware and jump in the corporate virtualization revolution. These moves, observers say, expose a strategy against VMware to commoditize hypervisor technology and then win the hearts of corporate users by providing choices for management and other tools to administer what experts say is a coming explosion in virtualization on corporate networks. VMware, which disputes any notion that hypervisor will become a commodity, has been the undisputed leader in virtualization since shipping its first product six years ago. No one is questioning the depth of its hypervisor, which eschews the stripped-down route and builds in proprietary management technology, nor are experts claiming VMware's dominance is in dispute in the near term.
Microsoft to patch broken OneCare update on 31 Jan
OneCare, which was introduced in May 2006, is Microsoft's first entry in the consumer antivirus software business and competes with consumer software from Symantec, McAfee, and others. Stephen Boots, the Microsoft Most Valued Professional who moderates the OneCare forum, has been trying to address many of the issues online, but has been suggesting those with other issues contact Microsoft's customer care. "There were too many problems with the v2 upgrade and too many remain now," Boots wrote in a post on Friday. For Webb, the problems have shifted his OneCare experience from positive to negative. "I liked OneCare before these problems appeared because it was hassle free and not a resource hog," said Webb, who has been using the program for a year and a half and renewed his paid subscription last July.
Comcast sales up, earnings flat
Comcast earnings fell sharply in the third quarter in the context of a year-earlier gain related to its acquisition of cable systems from Adelphia Communications. Comcast's net income fell 54 per cent to $560 million (E391m), compared with $1.22 billion, a year earlier. Most of the profit decline came from a year-earlier gain of $669 million related to Comcast's acquisition of cable systems from Adelphia. Excluding those gains, Comcast's net income rose 2 per cent. Revenue climbed 21 per cent to $7.78 billion from $6.43 billion. Comcast's results underscore cable companies continued flagging growth rates of basic-television subscriptions and high-speed Internet. Investors have revised their expectations for Comcast and its peers amid stiffer competition from satellite-TV companies and new services such as Verizons FiOS.

Sports TV programming scoring victories in battle for advertising ...
One answer: Think sports. Sporting events have been seeing increased interest from companies looking to promote themselves during shows that will be watched live, rather than recorded and viewed later, sans commercials. With digital video recorder use on the rise and the Writers Guild of America strike in its 10th week, "sports is the only thing that's fresh," said David Lubars, chairman and creative director of ad agency BBDO North America, which represents FedEx Corp., Pepsi-Cola North America and others that bought ad time during the coming Super Bowl. .
