American Express forecast adds to recession fears
Various stimulus plans have been proposed, including sending taxpayers a check for $500 apiece or accelerating public works programs. "Prospects for fiscal stimulus later this year are rising," according to economists at Goldman Sachs, who said the economy appears headed for a mild recession. Additionally, they said they expect the Federal Reserve to reduce its benchmark interest rate to 2.5 percent by the end of the year. That rate stands at 4.25 percent. Many Wall Street analysts believe policymakers will reduce it to 3.75 percent when they meet Jan. 29-30. Feinman said that while consumer spending has softened modestly, "business investment is still expanding and net exports have improved." Investors are awaiting a welter of fourth-quarter profit reports that will start to roll out next week.
