A war report discredited
So naturally there was great interest when the Lancet published a study in October 2006, three weeks before the midterm US elections, reporting that 655,000 people had died in Iraq as a result of the US-led war. Hundreds of news outlets, to say nothing of antiwar activists and lawmakers, publicized the astonishing figure, which was more than 10 times the death toll estimated by other sources. The Iraqi health ministry, for example, put the mortality level through June 2006 at 50,000. Iraq Body Count, a nonpartisan anti-war group that maintains a public database of the warÂ’s victims, tallied some 45,000 Iraqi dead. If The Lancet's number was accurate, more Iraqis had died in the two years since the US invasion than during the eight-year war with Iran. President Bush, asked about the study, dismissed it out of hand: "I don't consider it a credible report." Tony Blair's spokesman also brushed it off as "not .
Brumbies to join Canberra pitch
ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said the South African seminars were a fantastic opportunity to sell Canberra's employment and lifestyle advantages to South Africans interested in migrating to Australia. "The opportunity to conduct seminars and leverage off the popularity of the Brumbies in South Africa is one we will grab with both hands," he said. "The Live in Canberra team will conduct daily seminars on the advantages of living and working in Canberra, where Brumbies players and officials will help sell the message." He said it was important to continue to target South Africa, particularly with other states and territories active in attracting skilled workers from South Africa and other parts of the world. "Our city is ideally located, just two hours' drive to the ski-fields and the beautiful beaches of the South Coast, with a wide range of excellent and well-paid jobs," he said.
Beebe to Pardon 26
Monday, Beebe announced his intent to pardon 26 people and denied clemency or didn't take action on the applications of 54 people, including Calvin Leavy and Danny Edward Verdict. Leavy, who had the hit "Cummins Prison Farm" in 1970, is being held in the Jefferson County Jail and Correctional Facility, serving a 75-year term. Verdict is serving life in prison for his 1992 conviction in the shooting death of Marcella Verdict. A governor's office spokesman would not explain why the men were denied clemency but said Beebe looks at each case individually. Beebe has now issued 66 pardons or commutations since taking office in January 2007; his predecessor and now presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee issued 1,033 pardons and commutations during 10 years in office.
IBM Aims To Patent Profiting Off Patents
Chartove said IBM's proposed patent for patent portfolios might fall into that category. "It's not clear to me that there's a significant technological tie-in to the IBM application, at least in its present form," he said. Because of IBM's vocal stance on patents, the company took some ribbing on tech blogs recently when an application surfaced in which IBM sought to patent a method for outsourcing labor. Robert Sutor, an IBM executive for intellectual-property standards, responded on his blog that the application would be withdrawn because it was not in line with the patent-reform drive. This time, however, IBM wants to see the patent-portfolio application through. IBM spokesman Steven Malkiewicz said that while the application does describe a business method, "this is all only possible with technology." © 2008 Associated Press/AP Online.
